Project Overview

Working alongside Shoebox Films and first-time Director, Jessica Swale, we delivered roughly 65 shots for Summerland.

The film, starring Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is set against the backdrop of the Second World War.

As with most period dramas, much of our work was rooted in transforming modern Britain to reflect the 1940s, removing modern elements, adding period-appropriate signage and similar.

In addition, we were tasked with plenty of more nuanced visual effects work to help support the narrative.

Many sequences required sky replacement, and we also delivered full day-for-night conversion, the addition of a full façade of Dover Castle, crowd replication and a CG train.

Additionally we researched, concepted and delivered a Fata Morgana sky effect for a key sequence in the film – a peculiar optical illusion caused by the bending of light rays.

It was a pleasure to support a powerful new voice in the British film sector, and to work on a beautifully realised independent film. Summerland was released in UK cinemas in July 2020.
