Project Overview

Working alongside Production VFX Supervisor Michael Ralla, Outpost VFX delivered over 130 shots for the critically acclaimed Ryan Coogler thriller, Sinners.

Led internally by VFX Supervisor Ian Fellows, the Outpost UK team contributed to some of the film’s most climactic and memorable moments, including the vicious battle that takes place in the Smokestack brothers’ juke joint in the film’s third act.

Outpost’s work took in a number of disciplines, with a particular focus on gore enhancement and environment extensions. The latter also involved CG top and bottom extensions of certain interiors to help facilitate the blend between two different cameras, as Coogler set out to make the first film in history that blended 65mm and IMAX cameras, sometimes within the same shot.

Sinners is well known for its “twinning” of lead actor Michael B. Jordan, who portrays both of the Smokestack brothers, and Outpost was tasked with handling some of these moments.

Many grisly deaths take place in the film, and a significant amount of gore was handled practically by the SFX team and art department on set. However, to achieve additional spray and surface interaction the Outpost team blended 2D and fluid sim techniques to achieve the desired effect.

Sinners launched in cinemas worldwide in April 2025 to significant acclaim.
