Project Overview

Jason Bourne director Paul Greengrass has a very keen eye for detail and continuity, and as such utilised our broad VFX skillset across work ranging from 3D set extension to cosmetic work on Matt Damon and Tommy Lee Jones’ faces, plus clean-up, wire removal and DMP creation.

One such challenge was creating digital makeup on Matt Damon’s face to keep continuity across a sequence following a bloody punch up. The team leveraged Nuke’s powerful toolset rather than resorting to 3D face generation and kept the pipeline efficient and flexible.

This allowed for a fast creative feedback cycle and a lower cost to the client than if we’d gone down the 3D route. Nuke was able to deal with the high level of facial movement and head rotation, and through a combination of tracking tools and high level artistry this sequence delivered ahead of schedule.

One of the standout DMP shots we undertook was adding snow to an establishing shot flying over Reykjavik, Iceland.

With a huge amount of parallax in the plate, the DMP and compositing team recreated the shot in multiple sections and stitched it back together. Again, harnessing the power of our 2D pipeline kept the creative changes fast and allowed for a quick turnaround of the shot.

This was Outpost VFX’s second Universal project this year and was our fifth feature of 2016. Thanks to all the team at Universal and JB5!
